Facebook: The Good and The Bad

For my paper topic, I would like to analyze the positive and negative effects Facebook has had on society. More than just another social networking site, Facebook also allows for precise marketing techniques from both local and established businesses and presents users the opportunity to express themselves to others, whether it be through a video, idea, or picture. Unfortunately, with its rapid success over the past few years, the site has also had its criticisms. Facebook is often used for unintended purposes, such as cyber-bullying, spamming, and stealing personal information. Disputes on the site have also caused trouble in school and individuals to lose their jobs. I believe the best way to start researching this project is to perform some basic searches on both google scholar and Baruch College's library databasa. This should give me a great starting point and I can hopefully branch out into different areas from there.

Having used Facebook mostly during my free time in between classes, it will be interesting to use to the site to help me complete this assignment.

  1. I have actually sworn off Facebook. I haven't really been on for months now. I think it is a good thing to have to stay in tough with people who you don't see often, but otherwise it can be a pain. Why does everyone have to know what everyone else is doing every minute of the day?

  2. I think we as a society to put much emphasis these days on being connected. We say we want privacy yet we flaunt everything about us over the internet. People constantly feel the need to be "in touch" with their peers. We should start National No-Facebook Week at some point during each year.

  4. I also know a few people that don't have a facebook page. But I think its good that they don't have one because many of us are on facebook a lot and it can be addicting especially for those who likes to play facebook games. You can be doing other things other than facebook.

  5. Very interesting topic. I agree with your points and feel that you have an interesting spectrum to cover. Facebook most definitely serves its good and bad purposes and no doubt has changed the way people socialize forever.

  6. I am a frequent facebook user. Everytime I sit down to study, I log on to facebook to take a "break." One time I deactivated facebook for 3 months. I realized how much free time I had when I did not check my facebook every second of the day. Facebook does have alot of negative effects and it is addicting in good and bad ways.
